Optimism, gratitude and discipline were the traits JP Conte named when Authority Magazine asked what helped him succeed. The interview was published on Medium on July 30, 2026.

Founder and managing partner of his family office, Lupine Crest Capital, Conte has built a private equity career over decades. Each trait, he told the magazine, goes back to his family or to people who helped him early.

Optimism

“I believe you have to be optimistic to build anything worth building,” Conte said.

He learned it from his father. A tailor and clothing salesman, his father built a life in New York from very little after leaving his home country. Optimism, in his description, is confidence that hard work and clear thinking can solve problems. Risk is still taken seriously in that view, he said.

Gratitude

His father’s clients were named first. Then came his professors at Colgate University, where he graduated in 1985, and his early partners in private equity.

“Everything I’ve accomplished traces back to people who helped me when they didn’t have to,” JP Conte said.

That awareness is part of why the J-P Conte Family Foundation was founded, he told the magazine. It was established in 2017. The San Francisco-based foundation made a leadership gift in 2025 that helped put a new wildland fire engine into service in Aspen, Colorado.

Discipline

He waited tables to help pay his way through school, and early in his private equity career he put in long hours learning the mechanics of deal-making. Some years were a grind, and the payoff was not yet visible.

“Discipline kept me going,” he said.

“Talent gets you started, but discipline is what carries you,” he said. “A person with moderate talent and extraordinary discipline will outperform someone with extraordinary talent and no follow-through. Every single time.”

What He Values in Others

Discipline is also a trait he values in other people, in business and in philanthropy alike, Conte said. J-P Conte has given steadily to SEO Scholars and 10,000 Degrees, Bay Area programs that support students over several years. Both serve students in the region where his family’s foundation is based.

He gave a related answer to IdeaMensch in September 2026, naming consistency as the habit that keeps him productive. “Consistency compounds,” he told that site.

Commitments to management teams, students and university partners are how trust is built, Jean-Pierre Conte said in the same interview. He has served on Colgate University’s board of trustees since 2020.
